BLACK IRON SUMMER RUN CLUB: WHAT, WHO, WHY

WHAT – Black Iron Summer Run Club is a community celebration of all running abilities, distances and goals. Our team of certified, experienced nutrition and running coaches want to help you train for the 5k, 10k, Half, Full or 50k distance this summer – road or trail. Racing is not required. If you enjoy the community, support and commitment level of a race, you’ll race in August or September, preparing with Black Iron for 3 or 4 months. If you aren’t into the whole race vibe, you can “self run” or “fun run” your distance outside of the race setting, starting anytime between May 6-27, completing your run 3 or 4 months from your start date. If you need help finding or choosing a race or self/fun run route in your area, we can assist you with this upon sign up.

WHO – First off, let's throw out the idea that you have to be a "good runner" (whatever that means) to join Summer Run Club. In this club, we view everyone as a runner, whether you're just starting out or you've been running for years. Our club is all about inclusivity and support. You don't have to be super fast or go super far, you just have to show up for yourself and be willing to give it a shot. Black Iron Summer Run Club is for new, beginner or intermediate runners currently running anywhere from 0 to 5 hours a week. If you currently self-identify as “out of running shape” and want to train for a distance longer than a 10k, you totally got this, but we highly recommend choosing the 4-month plan, as this will set you up for the most success.

WHY – Because even though we’ve all said variations of “running sucks”/“I suck at running”, running is magic and movement is medicine. There are few better feelings than using your own two legs to travel a distance or pace you were initially unsure of, but you tried and did it anyway. We want to show you that you can truly succeed with running, no matter how serious or relaxed you choose to take it and no matter how much you might currently doubt yourself. Time to leave that self-doubt at the door and get this party started. Especially because you don’t have to do it alone with our coaching team and online Summer Run Club community at your back.

LIFESTYLE

If improving your running performance is not your primary goal this summer, this option is for you. You will work with a Lifestyle nutrition coach to reach your personal goals – whatever they may be – and feel your best. We suggest this option for recreational runners wanting to use running as their primary form of movement this summer to get in better shape and increase overall fitness, boost energy levels, build confidence, improve body composition, and more. Your nutrition coach will work with you in a way that supports your personal primary goals while also ensuring you’re fueling for and recovering from your runs (to help you improve as a runner this summer despite not prioritizing running performance).

PERFORMANCE

If your primary goal this summer is to improve your running performance (while simultaneously supporting your overall health, of course) this option is for you. We strongly recommend this for those wanting to do their absolute best in a race or self/fun run whether you’re running a new to you distance, wanting to PR a distance you’ve ran before, or have a similar running goal. Performance nutrition coaching is a bit more in-depth than Lifestyle, specifically catering to the needs of those with performance goals. Our Performance team all hold special certifications in sport and endurance nutrition and have mentally and physically helped runners of all abilities and distances reach their biggest goals on road and trail.

TEMPLATE-ONLY

If working with a nutrition coach does not meet your personal needs or budget, you have the option of purchasing the Black Iron Summer Run Club running template. This allows you to train for a race or self/fun run with the online community and gives you access to the running coaching team in the Mighty Network if you have questions about the template or need help troubleshooting. By choosing template-only, you will not receive any personalized nutritional guidance, but you will have a plethora of free nutrition resources available to you in the Mighty Network. If you are a new runner with minimal nutrition knowledge we suggest not doing template-only or at least booking a Nutrition Strategy Session before you start.

HOW NUTRITION COACHING WORKS

Once your application is processed, you’ll create a client profile by setting up payment and filling out a very detailed questionnaire for your coach. Upon its return, your coach will then create your nutrition plan and officially welcome you to the BIN community. You will start tracking your food and habits, then check in with your coach weekly; each week working on ways to improve and reach your goals.

DETAILED ON-BOARDING

When you join Black Iron Nutrition we’ll ask you to complete our detailed on-boarding form. We want to know everything there is to know about you in order to create a plan that you can not only stick to but will yield the results you seek.

WEEKLY CHECK-INS

You will check in with your coach weekly through the software, and in that check in, we ask it all! How you slept, hunger levels, energy levels, how we can best help you, how your training went, and so on.

PROGRESS TRACKING

From your profile you can see your progress over time. Body weight, measurements and photos are uploaded each week to keep track of your progress.

FOOD DIARY SYNCING

Our software syncs with Cronometer, MyFitnessPal, MyMacros+, Apple and Google Health. By using one of these apps to track your food, you can easily sync your food diary each week when you’re submitting your check in.

HEALTH STAT SYNCING

Our software also syncs with Apple Health, Fitbit, and Google Health Integration to shows us your daily steps, sleep and resting heart rate. These are useful tools for helping us to understand and analyze your progress each week.

HABIT TRACKING

If you’re struggling with certain aspects of your nutrition or just looking to become more consistent with something, habit tracking is a helpful way to make sure you’re implementing those changes.


HOW RUNNING PROGRAMMING WORKS

TEMPLATE

Based on your initial intake information (age, goal distance, recent running experience, threshold pace) the template produces your first week of training with specific and individualized running volume, target paces and heart rate zones. After each run you’ll enter info about how difficult that run was, then the template will use that data to decide how to progress your running volume for the next week. The template works through three phases. The Accumulation Phase, where the focus is on increasing overall running volume with most of the volume coming in the form of easy runs. The Build Phase will start to incorporate more high-intensity running. Lastly, The Pre-Comp Phase will prepare you for your specific goal distance by including increasingly more running at “race-pace” or near it. Every template includes a taper at the end. The template is entirely self-guided, but you can use the online community to connect with the BIN running coaching team to ask questions or get technical support.

If you are someone who is disciplined, fairly consistent, and doesn’t need accountability to stick to a running training plan AND doesn’t want or need feedback on runs, this option is for you.

CUSTOM 1-ON-1

You will fill out a very detailed form for your coach that goes over your schedule, current fitness level, running history/experience, goals, and more. Your custom program will start either 3 or 4 months out from your race or self-run depending on which options choose. You will receive your custom program one week at time in order for your coach to make any necessary adjustments based on how the previous week went as well as to factor in any life commitments, travel, etc. Your coach will also schedule your rest days. If you need to move training sessions around one week due to life curveballs, your coach will advise you on how to best do so. Good coaching requires good communication and feedback. Your custom training program includes in app communication and messaging with your coach so you can ask questions, leave comments on your training sessions, give your coach any necessary life updates, get advice on whatever you currently need help with, etc.

If you struggle with discipline, consistency, and holding yourself accountable to stick to a training plan OR you want/need direct feedback on your runs, this option is for you.
